Your chiropractor can test your steadiness, strength and balance.  Chiropractors can also give you advice on exercise and nutrition.

But the best choice is to prevent falls before they happen.  Therefore, if you’ve had a fall, or if you’re concerned about someone you love, here are five tips to keep in mind.

Handles and supports help with easier transfers in and out of showers and tubs. If you have them, use them; if you don’t, install them.  Also, every staircase should have a handrail.  If you find that one is not enough, install a second  on the opposite side.  In conclusion, if there’s an area where you often find yourself reaching for something to steady your balance, you should consider a permanent handrail or support.

Have your eyesight and hearing checked each year.  It’s easier to fall if you don’t have a clear picture of your footing.  Also, don’t walk around wearing reading glasses.  They make it harder to see your footing.  Your inner ear affects your balance, so having your ears checked is just as important as your eyes.

Exercise regularly.  In summary, the more flexible and fit you are, the more easily you will be able to avoid falls.

If you take prescription medication, ask your family doctor to evaluate your medication. Ask about side effects and interaction between medications that might affect your balance and stability.

Have your strength and balance checked by a professional, such as a chiropractor. If you have stiff joints, weak muscles, foot problems or limited range of motion, your chiropractor can help.
