It’s great to get out in winter and be active, but winter activities require different planning and precautions than spring, summer and autumn outings.

Pointers for Safe Winter Fun

Dress in layers.  Layers will keep you warmer longer.  Natural fibers like cotton, wool and silk work well.  Take off layers if you feel yourself starting to sweat—damp clothing will chill you.

Keep your feet dry.  “Fashion” boots that soak through will soon leave your feet wet and cold.  Invest in quality, warm, waterproof footwear if you’re going to be outside for longer than a quick walk between a car and a building.

Stay hydrated.  Don’t be fooled by the temperature!  Active bodies need plenty of fluids.  If you wait until you feel thirsty, you’re already dehydrated.

Know when to rest.  Rest when you feel tired.  Stop your activity if you experience sudden or prolonged pain in muscles or joints.  Cool down by stretching and change into warm, dry clothes.

Use the right safety equipment.  Helmets, face guards and protective clothing must fit you properly.  Make certain they are in good repair, or they won’t protect you as they should.

Visit your chiropractor.  Some winter sports, including skiing, tobogganing, snowmobiling and snowboarding, can be particularly hard on your back.  Your chiropractor can advise you if you’re thinking of trying a new sport, and regular maintenance care will help keep your back in alignment and your musculo-skeletal system healthy.

Nobody wants to spend the winter season sidelined with muscle strains and tears.  Be pro-active and make an appointment with Sheppard Chiropractic Centre today at (506) 635-8182 or (506) 847-7172.
