The holidays are supposed to be a happy time of year.  You may wonder if you’re the only person who is feeling blue, frustrated, or stressed out around Christmas time.  But in truth, many people struggle during the holiday season.  This week and next, we’ll share some tips that can help defeat your inner Scrooge.

Pre-planning reduces stress

Complete preparations early and you’ll feel less holiday stress.  It’s easy to feel cranky when you feel as though you’re running out of time.  A lot of pressure will vanish once your gifts are wrapped, your decorations are up and your events are scheduled.  Then all you will need to do is relax and enjoy the magic of the season.

Shopping Hacks for Scrooge

If you don’t enjoy shopping, take some time to think about gifts and get ideas before you find yourself wandering in a store.   Stay away from crowds by shopping early in the season and earlier in the morning.

Make a budget you can afford and stick to it to avoid later worries about overspending.  Gifts that encourage physical activity, like balls, hockey sticks, bike helmets, sleds and skates, are especially good for kids.

Find unique gifts by shopping locally.  Remember that money spent locally stays in the community and benefits your neighbours.

Feeling “hangry”

If you find yourself feeling particularly Grinchy, ask yourself:  when was the last time you ate?  “Hanger” – anger due to hunger – is very real!  Furthermore, if you’ve been making meals out of holiday sweets, caffeine, junk food, and/or alcohol, or if you’ve been too busy to eat regularly, your body will be feeling the effects of insufficient nutrition.

If you’re feeling like Scrooge, eat nutritious food every 2 and a half to 3 hours.  Yes, this means healthy snacks in between meals.  Be mindful of your consumption of caffeine (including chocolate and pop), alcohol, and sugary treats.

Regular chiropractic care helps your body to manage stress.  It will also improve your flexibility and comfort so you can enjoy all those holiday activities.  Make your maintenance appointment for a date early in the season.  That way, you won’t find yourself overwhelmed by holiday rush.   Call Sheppard Chiropractic Centre at (506) 635-8182 or (506) 847-7172 to schedule your appointment.  We look forward to seeing you soon!
