Many health care professionals recommend that everyone take a daily multivitamin.  But what kind of multivitamin you take can make a difference.

It’s still important to eat nutritious food.  But it’s challenging for a person to eat enough of every vitamin and mineral their body needs, without overeating, in the course of a day.  That’s why a multivitamin is your “insurance” that you’ll meet your daily minimums.

When you are under stress, your body will deplete itself of vitamins and minerals even more quickly.  At these times you may need additional nutritional support.

All multivitamins supplements are not the same!

Firstly, if you are vegan, gluten sensitive, or otherwise need to avoid certain foods – read the ingredients carefully!   For example, gelatin, while not unhealthy, is an animal product.

Secondly, check the list of non-medicinal ingredients.  Some brands sold through big box stores contain questionable ingredients, such as talc and artificial colour.  If you’re trying to live a healthy lifestyle, consuming unhealthy ingredients in your multivitamin is counterintuitive.  Avoid multivitamins with these kinds of ingredients.

A quality multivitamin will contain natural binders, usually vegetable-based.  A reputable company will test its supplements and ensure that the doses contain the advertised substances, in the advertised quantities.

We recommend Nature’s Sunshine as a reputable, quality brand.

Thirdly, make sure your multivitamin meets your needs.  Adult multivitamins are not suitable for children, and vice versa.

Fourthly, always check the dose as recommended on the package.  Some supplements may require you to take more than one capsule to get enough.  For others, one capsule might be a complete daily dose.  Do not exceed the recommended daily dose.

Fifthly, store vitamins (like all other medicines and supplements) safely away from children.  Tiny capsules look like candy to young eyes.  This is particularly true of children’s vitamins and chewable supplements.  These tablets may look colourful and taste good, but shouldn’t be consumed beyond the recommended daily dose!

A daily multivitamin will provide your body with reliable nutritional support each day.  Add in fresh, nutritious food and you’ll be well on your way to your best health.
