Chiropractic care is complimentary to other forms of medical care. Chiropractic care does not replace your family doctor, just as it doesn’t replace your optometrist, your dentist, or any other medical specialist.

However, chiropractic care is an excellent way to address musculo-skeletal concerns.  It can alleviate or eliminate discomfort.  In certain circumstances it can lessen or eliminate the need for drugs or surgery.  It supports your nervous system, which can help your body deal with chronic health conditions such as arthritis, asthma, and many types of headache.

Chiropractic care also places an emphasis on healthy living, safety, and wellness.  This can prevent injury and illness down the road.

There are a lot of myths floating around about chiropractors and family doctors.  We’d like to replace those myths with facts.

Myths about chiropractors and family doctors make it harder for people to access the care they need.

MYTH: There’s no reason to have a family doctor if you see a chiropractor, or vice versa.
FACT: Just like most people see a dentist as well as a family doctor, most people who see chiropractors also have family doctors. Chiropractors, family doctors and dentists are all different types of health care practitioners with different specialties. In conclusion, chiropractors are the musculo-skeletal experts on your health care team.

MYTH: You need a referral from your family doctor to see a chiropractor.
FACT: While we happily accept referrals, we do not require them. Everyone is able to choose their own chiropractor.  (If you are hoping to have your visits covered by accident insurance, etc. the insurance company may require a referral to do so, but we do not require a referral to see you.  If you have questions about your insurance coverage, please contact the insurance provider).

MYTH: Chiropractors are primary health care providers only in certain areas.
FACT: Chiropractors are legislated as primary contact health care providers in every province in Canada. This means that patients can consult chiropractors directly, at their own initiative, without needing authorization or referral. But chiropractors often work closely with family doctors.  For example, requesting copies of patient X-rays, if the patient gives permission.

In summary, we all have a wellness team who keep us feeling our best. This team includes family doctors, optometrists, dentists, massage therapists… It should also include a chiropractor. If you don’t already have a chiropractor on your wellness team, give Sheppard Chiropractic Centre a call at 635-8182. We’d be honoured to be your chiropractors.
