Summer is supposed to be a time for vacation, fun,  and making memories.  So why do so many of us feel stressed out, instead?  These five tips should help make your summer both memorable and relaxing.

Take time for yourself.

Sometimes it feels as though there’s “always something going on” in the summertime.  And if you’ve got kids, family routines change when they’re not in school all day.

Don’t allow yourself to become overwhelmed.  Or, if you already feel swamped, decline some events and activities.  It’s okay to say “no” and look after your mental health.  Focus on the things that are truly important, and permit yourself to value “down time.”

If you have kids, plan an overnight stay for them with a relative, or get a babysitter.  Take some time to yourself to unwind.

Plan activities throughout the summer.

Do you find that the end of August is always a stressful race to “get everything done” before school starts in September?  Do you find yourself wanting to go camping, visit family, or take a road trip, but you always run out of time and end up feeling regretful, stressed and tired?

Decide what activities are the most important and plan them for July if possible.

Leave the last week of August free to focus on back-to-school.

Relaxing summer fun doesn’t have to be expensive.

Is your stress coming from trying to balance your budget?  Fortunately, there are lots of local beaches and hiking trails that are free for the public to use.  You don’t have to take a long road trip to find a park for a picnic, or a campground where you can pitch a tent.  The experience of camping outdoors is like a whole new world, even if you aren’t that many kilometers from home.

Support your body by eating and drinking wisely.

Drink plenty of water.  You have already become dehydrated by the time you feel thirsty.  Get into the habit of drinking water regularly throughout the day.

Take advantage of fresh, local produce at farmers’ markets and the grocery store.  Fresh fruits and vegetables are packed with nutrition.  When it’s hot, cold foods like salads and veggies with dip are delicious and refreshing as well as healthy.  Minimize processed meats like hot dogs, sweets like ice cream, and junk food like chips.

Be moderate in your consumption of alcohol.  Remember that boats, bikes, canoes, skateboards and kayaks are vehicles too – don’t mix them with alcohol consumption.  Enjoy alcohol after a swim, not before.

Stay current on your health care regimen.

Just because it’s summer doesn’t make it’s okay to neglect your health.  Stay current with chiropractic maintenance visits.  If your body’s in alignment, it will be easier for you to enjoy your summer.  Don’t be sidelined by stiffness, back pain, headaches or strains.

And remember, chiropractic care helps you to manage stress.

Enjoy the summer!
