The holidays are supposed to be a happy time of year.  But some of us feel like it’s a Blue Christmas instead.  What should you do if you’re not feeling jolly?

For some of us, this year’s holiday traditions are going to change due to Covid-19.  Some of us will not be able to travel.  Others will have family unable to come home.

Other people may be coping with a death or illness in the family.  Some of us have negative memories associated with events that took place around this time in previous years.   And family conflict can make the holidays challenging.

Some of us are just stressed out from too much to do and not enough time to do it in.

For the next few weeks we’ll look at ways to cope with the holidays when it’s hard to feel merry.

Acknowledge your Blue Christmas feelings

Firstly, you cannot force yourself to feel happy.  It’s okay to feel sad about not being able to see family, to mourn a lost loved one, or to feel frustrated by the actions of others.  There is nothing “wrong” with you if you’re finding it hard to get into the holiday spirit.

Avoid dwelling

Secondly, you can choose where you focus your attention.  While you can’t change your feelings, you can guide your thoughts and choose your actions.

Spending a lot of time thinking about things that make you feel angry, frightened, or sad will drag your mood down.  If you find yourself ruminating about something that makes you feel bad, it’s time to find a distraction.  Choose activities that will engage your mind and keep you busy.

Give a gift to yourself

Thirdly, doing things that you enjoy isn’t a waste of time.  The easiest way to boost your mood is to let yourself have fun.

If you’re busy, block off time that’s “just for you,” over and above the time you need to rest and run errands.

Practice self-care

Finally, caring for your body also boosts your mood.  Resist the temptation to binge junk food and support your body with healthy meals.  Get enough sleep and also drink plenty of water.
