A parent’s work never ends.  It’s hard to keep up with your kids when you’re achy, stiff or injured.  Last week we gave you four tips for lifting babies and all the gear that comes with them!  This week we have five more pointers to protect your back.

Five More Pointers for Parents

When you travel, lighten your loads as much as you can. Think carefully about what you really need to carry with you, and leave unnecessary items at home.   The less you have to haul around with you, the less your risk of injury over time.

Adjust the handlebar on baby’s stroller so that it’s at a comfortable height. Belly button height is right for most people.  Avoid flexing your wrists when pushing a stroller.  You should be able to keep your shoulders and arms relaxed, and your wrists in a neutral position, when you take baby for a walk.

You don’t need to invest in a special changing table, but your back will thank you if you change the baby on a raised surface rather than on the floor. Lay a baby blanket over a table or counter for an instant “Changing Table” conversion.

You might not be used to spending a lot of time on the floor. That will change when you get down to play with baby.  When you can, support your back by leaning against a wall or against some furniture.  Regular stretches will help to keep your body flexible.  And whether you’re on the floor or not, get up and move every so often to minimize aches and pains.

Chiropractic care – so helpful for pregnant people as the baby places additional strain on the lower back – is just as helpful for new parents! Chiropractic care will keep you flexible so you can get down and play with your little one.  It can address any concerns that may arise before they develop into ongoing problems.  Chiropractic care helps to relieve stress.  And it will support your back as you go about the job of raising a family.

Chiropractic care is for the whole family – children as well as parents.
