Last week we talked about some of the conditions that laser therapy can treat. This week we’ll talk a little more about what laser therapy is and how it works. We’ll also talk about why it works so well for certain medical concerns.
How does laser therapy work?
Laser therapy uses light to penetrate through the skin, into tissues, where it stimulates the cells. The boost of energy allows cells to work harder and faster. This means that they heal more effectively with the assistance of laser therapy. Laser therapy also aids in pain relief. It stimulates healing and tissue regeneration, increases blood flow, and reduces inflammation and scarring.
The light comes from laser diodes in a light source that is applied to the skin. There is no cutting involved in this non-invasive, non-surgical treatment.
Since laser therapy stimulates the cells to heal more quickly, there are two major types of conditions that it helps to treat: chronic inflammatory conditions and acute injuries. These may seem like opposites. So why is that?
Chronic conditions
If you suffer from a chronic condition like arthritis, carpal tunnel syndrome, or bone spurs, your body struggles regularly against inflammation. By stimulating the cells to work harder and faster, your body gets a “boost” that allows it to better heal, and reduce, the inflammation and the pain that comes with it.
Acute injuries
If you have suffered an acute injury, your body is going to heal, but you will be uncomfortable until it does. Plus, depending on the nature of the injury, you may be concerned that the injury might not heal correctly. Some examples of acute injuries include sprains, strains, wounds, torn ligaments, or sports injuries.
By stimulating the cells to heal more quickly, you will spend less time suffering through the discomfort of the healing process. In addition, remember that chiropractors are musculo-skeletal experts. We can ensure that your body is in proper alignment and that your injury is healing as it should.
