Lately we’ve been talking about reasons that people fall.  It’s easier to minimize the risk of falls when you know why and how household falls happen.

One of the lesser-known reasons for falls is foot pain.

First, if your feet hurt, you might be walking gingerly to avoid sore spots.  Maybe you are walking on the sides of your feet, or in another unusual position, to “rest” those tender places.  These unusual positions can make it easier for you to fall.  As well, it’s common to stumble when you feel a sudden, unexpected burst of pain.

Secondly, a chiropractor can assess your gait (the way you walk).  We can prescribe orthotics for your shoes if you would benefit from them.

Thirdly, laser therapy is successful in treating numerous types of foot pain, including plantar fasciitis, arthritis, bone spurs, and sports injuries.

Poor strength and balance

If you have weak leg muscles, you are more likely to fall.  The good news is that you have the ability to do something about it.

Any activity that uses your legs can help to increase the strength of your leg muscles.  Brisk walking requires only a pair of supportive shoes.  Also, simple aerobics can be done in your living room, no matter the weather outside.  You may already enjoy dancing, sports, hiking, or other active hobbies—or you may want to explore a new activity that might be fun.

In conclusion, your chiropractor is able to advise you on exercises to support your body.
