As we get older, some of us become increasingly reluctant to go out for fear we might fall.  But the truth is that most falls happen inside the home.  Furthermore, falls can happen to people of any age.  Fortunately there are things you can do to help prevent falls.

Protect yourself with these five tips to prevent household falls.

Do you reach out to steady yourself in the bathroom, on the stairs, or elsewhere in your home?  Install a railing or support handle in those locations.  If railings on both sides of your staircase help you to feel more secure going up and down stairs, then they are worth having.

Reduce clutter.  It’s easy to bump into large objects or trip over small ones.  Give away non-essential items like throw rugs, or those decorative pillows that don’t seem to stay on your furniture.  Store things you rarely use, such as extra chairs for company, where they won’t be in your way.  Make sure items are picked up and put away when you are done using them.  Don’t leave them lying around on the floor.  When things do fall onto the floor, pick them up and put them away promptly.

Avoid rushing.  Many falls happen because a person is racing to answer the phone or the doorbell.  If a phone call is important, the caller will leave a message.  Visitors will wait.  Take your time and be safe.

Sit down to dress.  This includes your shoes.  Put a chair or bench near your door so you can sit when you put on and take off your shoes or boots.  You should also have a chair or bench in your bedroom.

Most of all, be mindful.  Before you move, pause and orient yourself.  Place your hand on a railing or handle and think about what you are going to do.  Take your time and use caution.  It’s easy to fall when you are distracted or disoriented.

Don’t let fear limit you

Staying active is good for your health, both physically and emotionally.  Regular physical activity will keep your body healthy and minimize your risk of falls.  Your emotional health will benefit from the ability to go out, socialize, and enjoy your favourite activities.  Don’t let the fear of falls confine you to your home.
