One of the most common sources of injury is household falls.

Canada’s chiropractors are committed to reducing injury and disability from falls.  We would like to help you minimize your risk.

How can chiropractors help?

A Doctor of Chiropractic can test your strength, steadiness and balance.  Chiropractors can also give you advice on safe exercise, nutrition, and falls prevention.

Chiropractic care can improve your flexibility.  It will help you to be at your best while you lead an active lifestyle.

Regular chiropractic maintenance is important at all ages but it becomes crucial as you get older.

How you can help to protect yourself from household falls

See your chiropractor regularly for maintenance care.

Never climb on a chair to reach something–chairs aren’t made for climbing on and can easily tip.  Use a stepladder or stepstool designed for this purpose.

Sit down to put on or take off shoes and clothing.  Place a chair or bench near your front door and in your bedroom for a convenient seat.

Take the time to put clothing and shoes away properly.  Clothing on the floor is a major cause of household falls.  Shoes should not be left in walkways where they can be tripped on.

If you wear reading glasses, take them off when you are walking.  Also, everyone should have regular eye check-ups whether or not you wear reading glasses.

Keep hallways and staircases well-lit so you can see where you are stepping.

Before you go up and down stairs, take a moment to pause and orient yourself.  Do the same when sitting down or standing up from a chair.  A major contributing factor for household falls is disorientation.  By taking a moment to be aware of your body and your surroundings, you minimize this risk.

Conversely, rushing anywhere is a prime time to have a fall.  Plan to give yourself time so that you don’t have to rush.  Take your time when you answer the doorbell or the phone.  If it is important, a visitor will wait, and a caller will leave a message or call back.

If you live with children, or have children coming to visit, remind them to keep their toys clear of stairs, hallways, and walkways.  It’s easy to trip over unexpected items on the floor or stairs.

When coming into the house from the store, don’t try to carry too many bags at once.  Overloading your arms makes it harder to see and harder to keep your balance.  It’s easier and safer to make more trips between the house and car with smaller loads each time.

If you do experience a fall, visit your chiropractor as soon as possible.
