Canada’s chiropractors are committed to reducing injury and disability from falls.
A Doctor of Chiropractic can test your strength, steadiness and balance. Chiropractors can also give you advice on safe exercise, nutrition, and falls prevention. Regular chiropractic maintenance is important at all ages but it becomes crucial as you get older.
Crucial Tips to Reduce Injury and Disability from Falls
See your chiropractor regularly for maintenance care.
Never climb on a chair or stool to reach something. Stepladders are more stable, but don’t stand on the top step. If you’re uncertain, ask someone else for assistance.
Sit down to put on or take off shoes and clothing. Place a chair or bench near your front door for a convenient seat.
Don’t rush to answer the doorbell or the phone. Visitors will wait. If a phone call is important, the person will leave a message so you can call them back. Take your time and be safe.
If you wear reading glasses, take them off when you are walking. Also, everyone should have regular eye check-ups whether or not you wear reading glasses.
If you live with children, or have children coming to visit, remind them to keep their toys clear of stairs, hallways, and walkways. It’s easy to trip over unexpected items on the floor or stairs.
The floor is not a good place to keep loose objects (dirty laundry, loose shoes, throw pillows, remote controls, etc.) Take the time to put laundry in the hamper, loose shoes on a boot tray or shoe rack, pillows back on the couch (or in a closet for storage or give them away), put the remote on an end table or shelf, etc.
When coming into the house from the grocery store or the mall, don’t try to juggle too many packages at once. Overloading your arms makes it harder to see and harder to keep your balance. As a result, you are more likely to drop something. It’s easier and safer to make more trips between the house and car with smaller loads each time.
If you do experience a fall, visit your chiropractor as soon as possible.
