Sometimes it feels as though we spend most of the year waiting for summer to arrive.  Now that it’s here, we want to make the most of it.  That means taking a few precautions so that we don’t waste our summer recovering indoors.

Check out our top five tips for safe summer fun.

Make time for regular chiropractic maintenance.  Summer often changes people’s schedules as we arrange vacations, visits and day trips.  Summer activities will put new stresses on your body.  Chiropractic maintenance will help address any potential problems early on, before they put a damper on your summer fun.

Be sun safe.  Sunlight is very intense this time of year, even on overcast days and in the shade.  Don’t forget your sunscreen.  Wear light long-sleeved clothing and a hat if you’re going to be outdoors for a long time.

Beware of sunglasses that don’t protect your eyes.  To protect your eyes from damage, you need sunglasses which block at least 99% of UV rays.  Colour and darkness of the lens do not guarantee good quality.  Neither does price.  There are a lot of expensive “fashion” sunglasses available that are more about looks than performance.  Whether cheap or expensive, “fashion” sunglasses are useless when it comes to keeping your eyes safe.  Always check the certification.

Look out for bikes, skateboards, and other small vehicles.  When you are on the road, remember that there are a lot more people on bicycles and motorcycles when the weather is nice.  These smaller vehicles are harder to see.  And don’t forget kids (and adults) on skateboards, roller blades, and scooters.

Check over your shoulder before turning either right or left, and before opening your car door to get out.  Slow down in residential areas.  Remember that vehicles are expected to share the road with cyclists and pedestrians.

And, finally:

Be smart about getting active.

Many of us want to get more active in the summer.  For some of us, that means getting out and about more often or doing some travelling; for others, it might mean starting an exercise programme, joining a sports league, or just swimming, jogging or hiking more regularly.  Check with your chiropractor before starting a new activity or increasing your activity level.  Your chiropractor can recommend stretches and exercises specific to the activities you have in mind.  This will reduce your risk of injury and help you feel and perform your best.
