For the last two weeks we’ve talked about the benefits you get when you drink water regularly.  This healthy habit is one of the easiest to adopt, and the benefits to the human body are immense.  It’s surprising that drinking eight glasses of pure fresh water every day isn’t the norm for everyone.

Is there any time when drinking water is a bad idea?

Yes.  But only two…

The first time you shouldn’t drink water is while you are eating.

Any liquid, including water, can dilute the enzymes you use to digest your food.

Some people may need a little liquid to help them to swallow, but overall, the less fluid you need to swallow your food, the better.

Your digestion will thank you!

If you have a glass of water before you start eating, it can help you to avoid overeating.  In fact, it’s common for people to feel hungry when they are actually thirsty.

Healthy snacks are good for you.  They help you to keep your blood sugar regulated.  They’re an excellent time to enjoy fresh fruit; the fruit is more easily digested when it’s not mixed with other foods.  But if your snack doesn’t satisfy you, or if you feel hungry when you’ve just had a snack or a meal, try drinking a big glass of water instead.

Similarly, if you’ve eaten a meal with proper-sized portions and you still feel “empty”, try a glass of water.

Remember, you don’t need to feel hungry or thirsty to have some water.  In fact, drinking eight glasses a day is easier if you make a habit of sipping water throughout the day.

The second time to avoid drinking water (or any other fluid) is right before bedtime.

It will disrupt your sleep patterns if you have to wake up throughout the night to use the washroom.

For most people, this means having their last glass of water for the day approximately 2-3 hours before bedtime.

The health benefits of a good night’s sleep are also a critical aspect of wellness that many people overlook.

Fortunately, you can get the health benefits of drinking eight glasses of water by starting to drink water earlier in the day, and giving your body time to eliminate most of that water before bed.

This means that you don’t have to choose between the health benefits of enough water, and the health benefits of enough sleep.
