The human spinal column is made up of 24 vertebrae stacked on top of one another.  The spinal cord runs from your head, through all your vertebrae, down to your pelvis.  The spinal cord is a cable of nerves which transmits messages from your brain to the rest of your body.

The Spinal Cord and Pain

If the nerves in the spinal cord become compressed or irritated, the message they transmit is “pain.”

Discs lie in between each pair of vertebrae and act as shock absorbers.  If the disc flattens or bulges, it doesn’t do its job.  The nerve can become irritated.  This is called a “slipped disc” or herniated disc.

The vertebrae also have facet joints, which, like other joints, are vulnerable to injury and wear.  Facet joints allow for proper spinal motion.  If they are not moving correctly, symptoms can occur.

Some people have a genetic pre-disposition to spinal abnormalities and early degeneration.  Others have experienced an accident—or series of incidents—that has injured their back.  Accidents and cumulative stress can also cause existing conditions to become worse.

What do you do if you have back pain?

Bed rest won’t make it go away.  Painkillers may mask the symptoms, but once they wear off, you’re in pain again.  Painkillers and other drugs also come with side effects.  Ice can help, but if your back is out of alignment, ice won’t fix the cause of your pain.

Chiropractic care is a safe, effective and all-natural way to treat back pain.  Chiropractic care is non-invasive and drug-free.

Chiropractors are musculo-skeletal experts who can treat all sorts of back pain.
